Too Sexy For Our Kids

Self Esteem Kouch Time Discussion on KirstyTV.com

Does society encourage women to be oversexualized? By ‘sexualization,’ we are referring to the perception of a person in regards to their sexuality.  So, by ‘oversexualized,’ in particular women, we want to discuss how girls and women are being bombarded with the pressure to be sexy.

Let’s start by addressing the sexualization of girlhood.  I’m talking about sexy media, dolls, video games, clothing, teenage magazines, just to name a few.

‘Ample evidence testing these theories indicates that sexualization has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, sexuality and attitudes and beliefs.’  (American Psychological Association – Sexualization of Girls)

How can parents delay or impede the effects of society’s sexy message to our youth?

If you have any doubts, here’s an example of pop culture’s message to our youth. It’s a video that a college student made for her social justice project. Tell me what you think.  I think the message is very clear.
